He decided to draw this book twice as large as most comic pages are inked these days. I think it's some of, if not the finest art of his career. So I was seeing his pages in my inbox daily for about five months as he drew it. Oh, I was writing it as Sean was drawing it, sometimes only five or ten pages ahead of him, towards the end. How did it feel seeing Sean Phillips' art after you'd already finished the cathartic writing process? I mean, I still had to write it all, and there were times I had no idea where it was going or how I was going to get to where it was going is maybe a better way to put it, but the setting made all the various weird parts of this story make sense, somehow.Īs you mention in your afterword, this is a remarkably dark story. Then when I was trying to figure out what book to write next, I remembered Sean's request, and the idea of doing this Night Fever story set in France just made all the pieces finally fall into place. I had the germ of it sometime around 2009 or 2010, but I could never get it to work right, so I just let it sit on the back burner while we did other projects. But Night Fever is an idea I've been picking at for years. It was something that Sean Phillips had asked about a few times, doing a story set in the UK or Europe, places he'd actually spent time, as opposed to all the U.S.

What appealed to you about the European setting? Anything more than that will spoil the book.
